type1diabetes

Healthcare often takes a backseat when poverty creeps in, turning life into a vicious circle of struggle.

Without aid or awareness, diabetes doesn’t just affect health—it derails lives.

Mamta has been suffering from juvenile diabetes for 8 years. She was diagnosed at a Rotary healthcare camp a few months ago. Prior to this, she was unaware of her condition and had spent 8 years without guidance.

After receiving full guidance and medical aid from the Rotaract member, her sugar levels came under control. However, this was not the end; it was just the beginning. Gradually, she developed retinopathy.

After undergoing angiography at the hospital, it was determined that she is at stage 5 of the eye condition. As a result, she has been advised to undergo intravitreal injections and laser treatment as part of her recommended medical care.

The Irony arises when Mamta refuses to take injections due to her fear that previous medication, intended to control her condition, led to the development of retinopathy.

Diabetes is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. Mamta, from a rural village with limited medical facilities, remained unaided and unaware for 8 years, causing diabetes to deeply affect her life both emotionally and physically.

After continuous counseling, she has agreed to undergo treatment.

However, her state of mind is now burdened not only by doubts about her recovery but also by the financial strain of her poverty-stricken condition, as she faces medical costs estimated at approximately 50,000 rupees.

“True health may be priceless, but money sure can buy the resources to protect it.”
